That puts us on the eastern fringe of the inner-city. Both Fairview and the neighbouring Troyeville are historic suburbs which date back to the founding of Joburg in the late 19th century.
One hundred years ago the area was inhabited by mining magnates and other upper-class Caucasians. Since the early 1990's it has become more colourful, with Mozambicans, Nigerians and Congolese living alongside (and in some cases on top of) South Africans of various persuasions.
Portuguese and English are the two most widely-spoken local languages.
